Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck is considered to be a major cosmetic surgery. This procedure tightens the abdominal muscles of a person’s body and it also gets rid of excess skin and/or fat. This is a very popular procedure when it comes to plastic surgery and can produce satisfactory results for many people. This operation is done on both men and women alike.

This cosmetic surgery is done by a surgeon making a long incision across a person’s abdomen. This is usually done from a person’s hip bone, over to the opposite hip bone. It is most often done while a patient is under general anesthesia. When the incision is made, it will look like as wide “v” shape. A second incision is usually then make around the navel area. The surgeons will the separate the skin form the abdominal wall, and up to the rib cage. The stomach muscles are then tightened and put in a new position. This is done to decrease the size of the waistline. Once the muscles have been tightened and the skin stretched, excess skin will then be removed by the surgeon. As the operation is progressing, a new hole is usually formed to correctly place a person’s naval.

The cons for this type of plastic surgery usually revolve around the healing time, as this is considered to be a major surgery. The cosmetic surgery itself will usually take any where from two to five hours. A patient may need to stay overnight in the hospital, this will depend on many factors, including how extensive the operation is. Quite a few weeks will need to be scheduled to recover and heal from this plastic surgery. The typical healing time is at least one to three seeks before a person should return to work and carry on with a regular schedule. This is usually some discomfort and the surgeon will most likely prescribe the patient some type of pain medication. A [person may go back to a regular exercise routine after enough healing has progressed and it can be done so without causing any pain. Scars will appear, of course and may even seem to be more noticeable within the first three to five months. It may take up to nine months or a year for scars to flatten down and become lighter in color. The scars will never completely fade, however a person can usually find they are easily covered by clothing.

The pros to this type of plastic surgery can be dramatic results. For those who have had very large abdomens they usually find that the needed healing time and scars are worth the fact that the waistline is recovered. If a person has realistic expectations and has tried endlessly to diet and exercise to no avail, they will most likely be pleased by the result. If a person is very displeased by the idea of any scars, this surgery is most likely not for them. However, for those who find diet and exercise just does not work for them, this procedure can greatly change the shape of a persons’ body.
